I live in Florida and have a Rufous Hummingbird that visits everyday. According to research, they shouldn’t be in Florida as they migrate on the west coast (Alaska to Mexico). Any ideas as to how it got here, and if I put out a regular hummingbird feeder do you think it will stay?
Interesting! It looks like there are reports of them in the southeast now, though they’re much less common there. If you can get a photo, it would be worth posting on a wildlife data hub like inaturalist. Data like this helps keep track of species range changes; and if you continue to see it, that’s valuable data too. We’re approaching the end of the season when sightings are common, but it’s hard to tell if that’s because the animals move on to areas with fewer active watchers, or because watchers are less active later in the year. Either way, I’m sure the bird naturalist community would be glad to have your visitor on record.
