Why has EOL created opendata.eol.org?

The short answer is we want a place where EOL can share different EOL datasets with the public. opendata.eol.org will host the CKAN data portal and provide tools to streamline publishing, sharing, finding and using EOL datasets.

We are now currently installing CKAN in opendata.eol.org. Once we get this going and begin installing features to our CKAN instance I’ll update this post and will be more elaborate in showing the steps on how to use opendata.eol.org and how to request new datasets for EOL to host on this service.

While some of our data users prefer an API that they can query dynamically, other use cases would be better served by downloadable files that can be saved and manipulated by the user.
